Nora M. Alter
Chris Marker
Having spearheaded the bourgeoning Nouvelle Vague scene in the late 1950s and developed a distinctive style involving still images, Chris Marker (born Christian Francois Bouche-Villeneuve) stands among the most influential filmmakers of the postwar era, yet remains enigmatic. His notorious reclusiveness has led to surprisingly few studies, and Nora M. Alter's "Chris Marker" presents the first English-language study of the director. Marker's 1953 debut "filmic essay", "The Statues Also Die" (with Alain Resnais) exposed the European art market's complicity in the former Belgian Congo atrocities, and provided a bold model for other politically committed filmmakers. Thus began Marker's long struggle against global injustice, a trajectory that included his involvement with "Night and Fog", "La Jetee", "Le Joli Mai", "Far from Vietnam", "Le fond du l'air est Rouge", and "Prime Time in the Camps". Alter's careful study includes interviews with the director and investigates the core themes and motivations behind an often unpredictable and transnational area that defies easy classification.

Elisabeth Wilson
Adorned in Dreams - fashion and modernity
When Adorned in Dreams was first published in 1985, Angela Carter described the book as 'the best I have read on the subject, bar none'. Elizabeth Wilson traces the social and cultural history of fashion and its complex relationship to modernity. Wilson delights in the power of fashion to mark out identity or to subvert it and this brand new edition of her book follows recent developments to bring the story of fashionable dress up to date, exploring the grunge look inspired by bands like Nirvana, the 'boho chic' of the mid 90's, retro-dressing and the meanings of dress from the veil to Beck's pink-varnished toenails.

Lucy Skaer
A boat used as a vessel
The play on words in the title rests on the formal and functional correspondence of the two nouns. The title reveals the multilayered process of naming and attributing meaning: while a boat can both literally be a vessel, it also becomes the vessel to hold the meaning of the title. This play on the ambivalent legibility of signs and their construction is the point of departure in Lucy Skaer’s exhibition, which shows real objects variously abstracted into pictures and symbols.

Willem Oorebeek
Bigger, Higher, Leader!
Willem Oorebeek's work presents a reflection on the status of the image and more especially on what technical reproduction does to an image or a message. Over the last few years he has been working on his BLACKOUT series, in which he prints on existing printed matter by hand, using black ink. The images he uses are of various origins, but he appropriates them and by making them illegible also pays tribute to them. In a certain sense, Oorebeek's work is akin to certain aspects of Pop Art, though his is more radical. Several recent works were be shown in this presentation at the S.M.A.K. in 2006.

Babak Afrassiabi & Nasrin Tabatabai
Kish, An Island Indecisive by Design
Kish, an Island Indecisive by Design tells the intriguing story of the modern development of an Iranian island in the Persian Gulf. Kish is an island where the extremes of politics, architecture and urban design visibly collide. In this book, artists Nasrin Tabatabai and Babak Afrassiabi give an evocative account of an architecture that persists in being a symptom of an ‘unresolved modernity’.
As a result of the shifting ideologies on mainland Iran in the last five decades, this ‘free zone’ resort has been the stage of conflicting desires for openness and resistance to the outside world. This is manifested most of all through excessive forms of architecture and planning, built and unbuilt across the island since the late 1960s, which in time have constituted a misplaced historical disposition for the island.

I read where I am
I Read Where I Am contains texts about the future of reading and the status of the word. We read anytime and anywhere. We read of screens, we read out on the streets, we read in the office but less and less we read a book at home on the couch. We are, or are becoming, a different type of reader. The question remains which shape will it take and what experience does one want? To answer these (and other) questions we have asked people from different backgrounds, subject to the aforementioned changes, to think about these issues.

Mikael Olsson
Södrakull Frösakull
This book explores the heritage of Bruno Mathsson, one of Swedish modernism’s leading designers, through two of his architectural works. In Frösakull – a house that Mathsson both designed and lived in – Mikael Olsson invaded, colonised and interacted with the remains of the house. In Södrakull, on the other hand – a second house that Mathsson designed and lived in – Olsson acted like a Peeping Tom, sneaking around the exterior of the house with his camera. This unethical method of trespassing a private space reveals something even more unethical, namely the fact that nobody, not even the Bruno Mathsson firm, took care of his property after his death.
In Södrakull Frösakull Mikael Olsson has created a phenomenological interplay between presence and absence, inner meaning and outer representation, turning the very notion of the human gaze inside out.

Richard Reynolds
On Guerrilla Gardening
On Guerrilla Gardening is an activist's call to arms to all citizens - green-fingered, green-thinking or curious - to join the revolution of guerrilla gardening: transforming public space into oases of colour and life. The enemy: neglect, apathy and the disintegration of community spirit. The arsenal: daring, a packet of seeds and a passionate commitment to social change. When Richard Reynolds first embarked on guerrilla gardening, growing flowers by moonlight outside his tower block, he had no idea it was part of a growing global movement committed to cultivating the potential in the land regardless of all obstacles. Charting the battles fought across thirty different countries and the revolutionary history of this subculture, On Guerrilla Gardening is an inspirational take on gardening in the 21st century.

De Hongerige stad
The relationship between food and cities is fundamental to our every day lives. Food shapes cities, and through them, it moulds us - along with the countryside that feeds us. The gargantuan effort necessary to feed cities arguably has a greater social and physical impact on us and our planet than anything else we do. Yet few of us are conscious of the process and we rarely stop to wonder how food reaches our plates. De Hongerige stad examines the way in which modern food production has damaged the balance of human existence, and reveals that we have yet to resolve a centuries-old dilemma - one which holds the key to a host of current problems, from obesity, the inexorable rise of the supermarkets, to the destruction of the natural world. This book illuminates an issue that is fundamental to us all.
